Lewandowski isn’t the only sporting talent in his family.His father Krystof was a Judo champion in Poland and also played football for Hutnick Warsaw.While his mother Iwona was a professional volleyball player – a career path which his sister Milena also took.

9. He and his wife are nicknamed the ‘Polish Beckhams’

Lewandowski got married to his wife Anna in 2013 and she is also a famous sportsperson.Anna won a bronze medal for Poland at the Karate World Cup in 2009 and has represented her country in several championships around the world.Their relationship has also drawn lots of attention from the German media, who have labelled them the ‘Polish Beckhams’.7

8. He was given a helping hand by his pals at Dortmund

When Lewandowski joined BVB, his compatriots Lukasz Piszczek and Jakub Blaszczykowski took him under their wing to help him settle at the club.BVB manager Jurgen Klopp then nicknamed Lewandowski’s pals Lolek and Bolek – who are heroes from a famous Polish comic book7

7. He famously got stuck in a traffic jam

Lewandowski has a huge following and when Dortmund beat Werder Bremen in 2012, he was immediately booked onto a sports programme in Germany.Unfortunately, he got stuck in a traffic jam due to a collapsed bridge – and despite the German channel sending a helicopter to pick him up, he was unable to make it.

6. He was once compared to a tree when scouted as a youngster

Franciszek Smuda, who is now the coach of Polish side Gornik Leczna, once watched Lewandowski in action after he was recommended by a scout.After 15 minutes of action, he was not impressed with the forward’s performance, saying to his scout: “You owe me petrol money. If I wanted to see trees I would have gone to the forest instead.7

1. A volcano stopped him from going to Blackburn Rovers

Shortly before moving to Dortmund, Lewandowski personally met Sam Allardyce about a potential deal to sign for Blackburn.He was then set to complete a switch to the Premier League side before the Eyjafjallajkull volcano in Iceland erupted in 2010.The volcano formed an ash cloud that heavily disrupted air travel and Lewandowski was unable to travel to England to seal the switch.He subsequently moved to Dortmund and the rest is history.7
